Abacavir is in a class of antiviral medications called nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs).

It works by slowing the spread of HIV infection in the body. Abacavir is not a cure and may not decrease the number of HIV-related illnesses. Abacavir does not prevent the spread of HIV to other people.Abacavir Capsules – Taj Ando Pharmaceuticals, South Africa | Abacavir is used in combination with other medications to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in patients with or without acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.Abacavir is used in combination with other medications to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in patients with or without acquired immunodeficiency syndrome(AIDS).Abacavir Capsules – Taj Ando Pharmaceuticals, South Africa | Abacavir is used in combination with other medications to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in patients with or without acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.Abacavir is used in combination with other medications to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in patients with or without acquired immunodeficiency syndrome(AIDS).

Abacavir has caused severe and sometimes fatal allergic reactions.

You should check with your doctor immediately if any of these side effects occur when taking Abacavir:

  • fever
  • rash
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • stomach pain
  • cough
  • sore throat
  • trouble breathing
  • unusual tiredness or achiness
  • general feeling of being unwell

Patients who have a certain gene type called HLA-B*5701 have an increased risk of allergic reaction. A lab test may be performed before you start abacavir to see if you have this gene type.

Abacavir may cause severe and sometimes fatal high blood acid levels (lactic acidosis) and liver problems. The risk of these problems may be greater if you are a woman, are very overweight, or have a history of liver problems.

It may also be increased in patients who have taken certain HIV medicines for a prolonged period of time.
